SCORE Chapter 21 Chairman Sam Simler (left) and District Director Carl Trautmann
(right) accept grant from Kathy Siddons of U.S. Bank

SCORE Chapter 21 in St. Louis received a grant from U.S. Bank to help defray the expenses of starting and improving small businesses.

We appreciate the foresight of U.S. Bank in seeing the opportunities facing SCORE by approving the grant.

SCORE nationwide is implementing a business model to ensure consistency of business counseling methodology toward the creation of one million new businesses through the year FY2017. The methodology will apply counseling techniques for specific client interests including, pre-start, start, in-business: rescue, in-business: growth, core workshop program and volunteer certification. Since economic growth is a vital mission of SCORE, a specific methodology for making successful businesses out of innovative ideas is also being considered. SCORE is aspiring toward the professionalism of the major consulting firms.

SCORE Chapter 21 is working hard to adopt these lofty goals. In FY2010, the SCORE Chapter has launched several improvement programs aimed at increasing our effectiveness in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Two main categories of improvement are particularly needed: 1) train the trainer, and 2) capacity building.

Counselor effectiveness training programs are being revised to align directly with the 5 step counseling process published by SCORE national. Case assignment tracking is being upgraded. In addition, more effort is being exerted to obtain client feedback so as to improve counseling, mentoring and coaching.

The second main category of improvement is in capacity building. More effort is being put into contacting chambers of commerce and other service organizations. PR and promotional materials are being reordered with brochures for several varied specific uses.

The SCORE Association will host a series of Workshops on SBA Community Express, Patriot Express, and Export Express loan programs in the St. Louis area during January, 2009. Admission is free, and prospective borrowers should bring personal identification, business license and business checkbook as they will be able to apply for an SBA-guaranteed Community Express, Patriot Express or Export Express loan at these workshops.

The Community Express loan program is targeted toward creditworthy small businesses that may have trouble obtaining a business loan through banks. The primary determinant in making a credit decision is character of the owner and cash flow of the business. It is an alternative to financing a business using credit card debt or balloon notes. The Patriot Express loan initiative is available to active military, veterans, service-disabled veterans, reservists, guard members and their spouses/widows. The Export Express loan program is available to finance the export of American-made goods and services to foreign markets. All SBA loan programs are available to small businesses by most national & community banks located in the St. Louis region.

A small business financing expert, Sue Malone with Superior Financial Group, will make presentations at each Workshop. SCORE counselors will provide free consultations and technical assistance to prospective borrowers at all six sessions of the workshops. While reservations are not required, they are encouraged.

Please e-mail Laurel at SCORE, admin@stlscore.org or call 314-539-6600, extension 260, to make a reservation for one of the six sessions or to learn more about these workshops.
